Grey's Anatomy: Watch Out for Kim Raver, Cristina

Can any woman match up with the fiery and intense Cristina Yang? Well, how about toughie Audrey Raines from 24? Kim Raver is set to drop by the November 12 episode of Grey's Anatomy and it won't be good news to the happy couple Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Yang (Sandra Oh).

Raver's character Teddy Atlman is also an Iraqi War veteran, and she is hired by Owen as the new cardiothoracic surgeon, and right away, Cristina questions her abilities in the OR plus the nature of their relationships. By the way, this is also the same Grey's Anatomy episode where Izzie (Katherine Heigl) makes her return.

As for Raver, 40, she admits that she indeed will cause trouble for the happy couple of Seattle Grace. "She was in Iraq with Owen. She's a cardiac surgeon. She's really good at what she does. There'll be some interesting stuff between Teddy, Cristina [Yang] and Owen," she said.

"There's definitely a hint of a triangle," she summed up.

How long will she stay on Seattle Grace to stir up the relationship of Yang and Owen? She's still not sure, but lest we forget, it's a similar situation when he joined 24.

"I'm recurring, but I don't know the [exact] length. It's interesting because Teddy is in the same situation. It creates an exciting dynamic because it forces me to be very present and enjoy playing this really great character.

Watch out for Kim Raver on "New History" set to air on Grey's November 12.

'Grey's Anatomy': Mercy West is in, Izzie Stevens is out

In Thursday night's "Grey's Anatomy," we finally met the enemy: Mercy West interns and residents stormed Seattle Grace.

I'll get this little rant over with right from the start: Why does Shonda Rhimes love to pit her doctors against one another? In the beginning the interns were fighting over surgeries. Then they fought over solo surgeries. Then they fought over specialties. There was even a storyline where the top surgeons in the hospital were grappling for the Chief's job like kindergarten kids fight over the coolest toy on the playground.

I'm sick of it! It's childish and they're compromising their patients. I rolled my eyes when Alex stole lab results in order to hijack a patient. It's such childish behavior. Someone send these people to the time-out chair, please.

Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about the Mercy West influx! Meredith compares them to multiplying bacteria in her voice-over intro, but I have to say, I kind of like the little germs.

I did find it absurd that the Mercy Westers were all dressed in orange scrubs. I realize that it was an attempt to set up a more obvious division, but really, did they think we wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the new doctors and the ones we've been watching for five years now? When the Seattle Grace residents watched in horror as the Westers swarmed the floor, it reminded me of that scene in "E.T." when the government agents descend on Elliot's house in their hazmat suits.

As if the orange scrubs weren't enough, each Seattle Grace doctor was paired with a Mercy West newbie. Let the games begin. Is this "Grey's Anatomy," or did I accidentally change the channel and land on MTV's latest "Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Emergency Room"?

It seemed as though they set Reed (Nora Zehetner) up to be the bad guy when she stole George's locker and refused to budge even after Izzie asked her to. Was I the only one who found it hard to sympathize with Izzie when she subsequently freaked out? I do miss George's presence on the show, and I understand that he was Izzie's best friend, but Izzie overreacted. As a doctor, she should be better equipped to cope with death. Plus, it's just a cubby. It's not like Reed parked her car on his grave and drew a mustache on his last photo.

One of my favorite Mercy Westers is intern April (Sarah Drew). I loved Drew on The WB's "Everwood," and I'm thrilled to see her again, in a very different role this time. Her saccharine-sweet attitude and wide-eyed insincerity were hilarious, as was her super-mysterious hot pink notebook full of morale-boosting platitudes. Personally, as long as she's a good doctor and doing her job, I don't care what it takes for her to keep her self-esteem up during the day, whether it's a notebook or a nose-job.

I was happy to see Callie's family story revisited. Last we saw Mr. Torres, Callie told him that she was in love with a woman and their once-strong relationship crumbled instantly. In Thursday night's episode, her father flew across the country with a priest and a handful of Bible quote flash cards.

Callie was furious when she discovered his intentions. "You think you can pray away the gay? You can't pray away the gay!" she shouted in the hospital waiting room. While it may not have been the most appropriate choice of locations for her exclamation, it's a pretty catchy turn of phrase. I expect to see that one on plenty of protesters' signs this year.

By far the best moment in this episode was Arizona's scene with Callie's father, Mr. Torres. Jessica Capshaw has an incredible ability to take even the most melodramatic of "Grey's" speeches and deliver them with a subtlety and an honesty that makes them come off as sincere instead of overwrought. "I was named for a battleship," she said, and in the powerful monologue that followed, she calmly and carefully explained that Callie was still the woman Mr. Torres raised. It was really beautiful.

And last, but certainly not least, we must address this episode's big "shocker." In the final moments, Chief Richard Webber fired Izzie Stevens.

I'm a big fan of Katherine Heigl and I'm sad to see her go, but Izzie deserved it this time. She's temperamental and she's not acting rationally. She's still recovering not only from the cancer treatment, but from the death of her best friend.

Izzie was shocked, initially assuming that she was being fired for having cancer. It turns out that her goof with the kidney patient -- a mistake she made, unsurprisingly, while her judgment was clouded by petty competition -- is what cost her her job.

"You let me come back after I cut an LVAD wire!" she shouts. Uh, maybe I'm wrong, but I'd guess that announcing your prior egregious errors of judgment while begging for your job is slightly counterproductive.

Chief begins to explain his decision, mentioning that other doctors had questions about her stamina and emotional stability -- among them her husband, Alex.

And thus, we come to the episode's true shocker. It was previously reported that Heigl would be taking a five-week leave of absence from "Grey's" to work on a movie and to bond with her newly adopted daughter, Naleigh, so Izzie's release from Seattle Grace was a given.

I wasn't expecting her to actually leave Karev, though -- and especially not in a hastily written note stuck on his locker. That's how you break up with your seventh-grade boyfriend, not the husband who stuck by your side through cancer (and creepy ghost-sex). Alex's reaction was the perfect mix of devastation and disbelief, as were Meredith's and Christina's.

I can't wait to see what kind of reception Izzie gets when she comes back in a few weeks. A few days ago, Shonda Rhimes tweeted: "Things may happen, but [Alex and Izzie] are meant for each other. Remember that." Hmmm.

What did you think of Dr. Stevens' dramatic exit? Did you think she deserved to be the first of our beloved residents to get the boot? Talk about it in the comments below. While you're at it, let me know what you thought of Arizona's speech and the bright orange Mercy West incursion.

Be sure to check back next week! I'm looking forward to seeing how Alex picks up the pieces. Is he going to stick it out in that bear-bait trailer all by himself?

Burke returns to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ — sort of Plus spoilers on ‘NCIS,’ ‘House,’ ‘Greek’ and more

Question: Is it at all possible that Shonda Rhimes would bring Isaiah Washington back to “Grey’s Anatomy” for even one episode now that T.R. Knight has left the show? —Ben

Ausiello: Listen to me very carefully, because I’m only going to say this once: Never. Gonna. Happen. But Washington kinda-sorta gets a shout-out in this week’s episode when Owen-lovin’ Cristina utters three shocking words: “I miss Burke

Question: Sounds like you’ve already seen this week’s “Grey’s,” so I’ve got a Q: Any good Mer-Der scenes? —Megan

Ausiello: Nothing stands out on the Mer-Der front, but there’s a memorable Mer-Cristina-Alex scene at the end that will have you crying and laughing (and in that order).

Question: Any “Grey’s” scoop? —Sharon

Ausiello: You already know that someone gets fired in this week’s episode. But what you may not know is that someone gets fired next week, too!

Question: Julie Benz just Twittered a photo of a guy she says will be part of a big reveal in the “Dexter” season finale. What can you tell us about this? —Matt

Ausiello: Here’s what I can tell you: If this guy is who I think he is, fans are not going to be happy.

Question: Jenny is so boring on “Gossip Girl.” Please tell me she will become mean. —Juliana

Ausiello: Mean enough to drive her BFF away. I hear Jenny and Eric’s relationship will suffer big time due to her new “Queen Bee” status.

Question: I’m thrilled Jorja Fox is sticking with "CSI" but what about William Petersen? I want to see Grissom and Sara together. —Alex

Ausiello: They were just together, albeit off screen. As exec producer Carol Mendelsohn tells me, Sara will reveal in this week’s episode that she “just got back from visiting Grissom in Paris.” Mendelsohn adds that, “We have no plans for Billy to return at the moment, but the door’s always open.”

Question: Will we see a storyline involving Chloe and Oliver on “Smallville” anytime soon? —Marie

Ausiello: Yes, very soon. Next Friday’s episode, “Roulette,” is all about Oliver, with a little Chloe twist thrown in.

Question: Why are you ignoring the No. 1 show in the ratings? Seriously, give us some scoop on “NCIS”! —Alexandra

Ausiello: This may or may not be a first for the show, but this season “NCIS” will devote special episodes to Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. How much you wanna bet that last one will feature a golden Ziva moment? I’m in for $10.

Question: I am really confused. Did I miss a scoop that Tracie Thoms was leaving “Cold Case”? I liked her character and enjoyed how Miller was starting to get to know ADA Bell. Is she off the show for good? —Paige

Ausiello: No, not for good. Thoms’ episode order was cut back this season, so Miller will be missing in spots. But a “Cold Case” insider assures me that she remains a series regular and we’ll see her again “soon enough.”

Question: Rumor has it someone’s dying on “Melrose Place.” Who is it?! —Shane

Ausiello: It’s not a major character, so relax. If you want to discuss a major upcoming death, ask me who’s going to bite it on “Vampire Dairies”

Question: You recently said that Robert Sean Leonard should prepare an Emmy acceptance speech, so that must mean Wilson has some juicy storyline action coming up on “House.” What can you tell us about our favorite boy wonder oncologist? —Clover

Ausiello: Don’t be surprised if around episode 10 the tables turn and House ends up nursing Wilson back to health.

Question: I am dying to know what’s going to happen before the season ends on “Greek”? —Paola

Ausiello: The Nov. 2 finale promises to be the show’s most ambitious to date. In a word, musical! “Our girls’ story is centered around a traditional sorority competition called ‘Songfest,’” explains series creator Sean Smith. “[They perform] some big song-and-dance numbers as they go up against Gamma Psi to get the house back on top.” That explains the return of High School Musical’s Olesya Rulin as perky ZBZ pledge Abby, who Smith says sprinkles some “great HSM references” throughout the episode. And then there’s this: “One of our Kappa Taus graduates,” Smith reveals. “That’s right, I used the G-word.”

Question: I am dying to know what happens with Casey and Cappie on “Greek”! —Bri

Ausiello: Wow, you “Greek” fans are playing the death card to, um, death this week. Well, it’s working, because I can tell you that this season’s penultimate (and prematurely Thanksgiving-themed) episode on Oct. 26 will reveal which way Casey’s love life is going — towards Evan or Cappie.

Question: Is there any news on that planned “Pushing Daisies” comic book? —Tommy

Ausiello: Bryan Fuller just turned in the script for the first one and he’s currently working with the show’s writers on the next three. Here’s a spoiler to whet your appetites: The first comic, which I’ve read and is awesome, features the return of ***a* *****iu*!

Question: Two “Criminal Minds” Qs for you: Is Hotch going back to his ex-wife Haley after he catches Foyet? And will Emily finally have a love life? —Marbs

Ausiello: “Hayley will definitely play an important role in the taking down of The Reaper,” responds exec producer Ed Bernero. “That’s really all I can say about that right now. And as far as Emily, we’ve all been talking a lot about her and her ’status,’ though no final decision has been made. She’s become a very important character for us in a number of ways. I think it’s fair to say that we are as interested in Emily Prentiss finding love and balance in her life as the audience is.”

Grey’s Anatomy: Family Ties

Grey’s Anatomy: Family Ties

The latest episode finds our doctors tested in various ways. Alex’s patience, Owen’s judgment, Meredith’s loyalty, and Cristina’s endurance are all tested. Some pass with flying colors; others come up short.

Alex and Izzie are still adjusting to their new marriage and coping with her recovery. They are living in that ridiculous trailer that Derek used to live in, parked outside of the house he shares with Meredith. As Alex walks out of the front door to go to work, he sees a bear and emits a scream that sounds like he doesn’t have any boy parts. He thinks they should move back in with Meredith, but Izzie understandably wants to move forward rather than regress, plus they can’t afford to move. She changes her tune by the end of the episode though, after she confronts the bear herself. Somehow death by mauling doesn’t sound too enjoyable.

Seattle Grace is merging with Mercy West, and several of the nurses and support staff are losing their jobs. Many doctors fear they are next on the chopping block. In an effort to distinguish themselves, they are clamor for surgeries to showcase their skills and remind the powers-that-be of the doctor’s utility. Cristina is having the hardest time getting a surgery, in part because Owen wants to avoid the appearance of favoritism. He would rather give Izzie a chance to show everyone that she’s not too fragile to resume her duties. Her first case hits close to home: a cancer patient with a long-term girlfriend. The man requires high-risk surgery that Owen is reluctant to perform because it is not statistically in the patient’s favor. Izzie reminds him that she beat the odds and says the patient should have a chance to fight. Her emotional plea is persuasive, and Owen agrees to perform the procedure if the patient opts for it. The patient agrees, but unfortunately ends up dying on the operating table. This was heartbreaking because Izzie really liked the patient and his girlfriend, as they probably reminded her of she and Alex. Owen is furious that he second-guessed his original opinion, and he questions whether Izzie is fit to return to patient care. He reminds her that she beat the odds, but that she was an exception and she can’t go around presenting emotional options to patients.

The focal point of the episode was Meredith’s estranged, alcoholic father who needs a liver transplant due to life-threatening cirrhosis. He was basically an absentee father to Meredith throughout her childhood. Ironically, he was everything for Lexie that he was not for Meredith: a loving, devoted father. When he is admitted to the hospital vomiting blood, Lexie immediately gets tested to see if she is a candidate to be a liver donor. Meredith feels no such obligation and seems ambivalent about the whole thing. She does have a loving relationship with Lexie however, and doesn’t want to see her hurt. Because she loves her sister, she agrees to get tested and ultimately decides to give her father a liver transplant. She makes it clear that she’s doing it for Lexie, but she also leaves the door open for a potential relationship with her Dad in the future, if he desires it.

Greys Anatomy 6.4 pic 2Now we come to Cristina, who is falling out of favor with this viewer. She’s super-competitive above all else. When she can’t get the surgeries she wants, she marches in to the Chief’s office and basically tells him that if she can’t do real surgeries that matter, then he should just cut her. An elderly man wanted a penis pump, and she performed the surgery but apparently that was not glamorous or important enough. I hope the Chief calls her bluff and lets her go, but of course that won’t happen. She needs to be brought down a peg, and I hope it happens next week. She did not pass her test!

Grey's Anatomy: TR Knight Wants a Baby!

OK, first there was Ellen Pompeo, then Chyler Leigh, then Katherine Heigl. Now TR Knight revealed that getting a baby may just be in the horizon for him, or at least he's not opposed to the idea. Knight was talking about Heigl's recent adoption of baby Naleigh on the Ellen Degeneres Show when the host commented that everyone's having a baby and asked him if he wanted one himself.

"I want a baby!" the former Grey's Anatomy star gushed.

"You do? You really do?" asked Ellen, just when Knight asked her, "Do you have one?" "No I don't one," she said, and he replied jokingly, "Cause sometimes you give people things."

Prodded if he was serious, the 36-year-old actor said yes. "I don't know if it's going to end up working out, but that would be something I would like. We'll see." Knight added that he does have two dogs.

Knight, who left Grey's Anatomy last season because of disagreements with creator Shonda Rhimes, has reportedly been dating Mark Cornelson since early 2008.
